Is a character dining experience at Disneyland Paris worth it? When it is and when it isn't

October 14, 2026•12 min read

A character dining experience is one of those activities that comes up right away when you start planning your trip to Disneyland Paris. You see the photos, imagine the look on the children's faces—or your own, because adults have the right to get excited too—and it's easy to think it should automatically be part of the trip.

But when you start fitting in restaurants, parks, schedules, and budget, the real question arises: Is it worth booking a character dining experience at Disneyland Paris?

Our answer is that it can be very much worth it, but not just for the sake of being "very Disney." It makes sense when meeting characters is part of the magic of the trip and you want to set aside a specific time to experience those encounters more calmly.

If you are not particularly interested in characters, there are wonderful restaurants and many other experiences where that time and budget might be more valuable to you.

Because here, as with almost everything Disney, it is not about doing what you are supposedly supposed to do. It is about choosing what resembles the trip you want to experience.

What you are really paying for in a character meal

The simplest way to evaluate these experiences is to stop thinking only about the food.

Of course, you are going to have breakfast, lunch, or dinner. But the difference compared to a conventional restaurant is that during that time, encounters with Disney Characters also take place.

Disneyland Paris itself explains that characters visit the tables during these experiences, which allows you to share a moment with them, take photos, or ask for autographs while you are eating. It also makes something important clear: the characters present may vary and none are guaranteed in particular.

Therefore, an important part of the value lies in combining two things at the same moment of the trip: sitting down to eat and enjoying character encounters.

This can be especially interesting when characters are a priority for you. Instead of viewing the whole experience as "paying more to eat," it might make more sense to ask yourself how much value there is in being able to integrate those encounters into a meal you were going to have anyway.

When it can become one of the best memories of the trip

There are families for whom meeting characters is a secondary part of Disneyland Paris.

And there are others for whom it is one of the reasons why the trip is so exciting.

If you are traveling with a child who has been imagining that moment for months, a character meal can have enormous emotional weight. Not because it guarantees that their exact favorite character will appear—Disney does not guarantee that—but because it turns the meal into an experience in itself.

It can also make a lot of sense for adults.

Sometimes we talk about these experiences as if they only have value when there are small children around, and that is not the case. If you are a very Disney-loving couple, you especially like the Princesses, or you are simply excited to share that kind of encounter, you do not need any additional justification.

Disneyland Paris does not have a single "correct" way to be experienced.

For some, the strong memory will be an attraction.

For others, a show.

And for someone, it could perfectly be that photograph during a meal that, years later, still appears among the favorites of the trip.

If characters are not a priority, it might not be worth it

It must also be said that the opposite is true.

We would not book a character dining experience just because it appears on every "must-do" list.

If no one in your group feels particularly excited about these encounters, the experience may lose much of the value that justifies setting aside time and budget for it.

In that case, you might prefer a restaurant whose cuisine or atmosphere appeals to you more, a quicker meal that leaves more time for the park, or simply investing that budget elsewhere in your trip.

In our guide to restaurants in Disneyland Paris You can compare other types of dining and think about which option best fits your pace.

A special experience is only special if it is special to you.

What character dining experiences are currently available at Disneyland Paris

It is important to stay updated here, as the offerings have changed.

Plaza Gardens Restaurant is currently closed for a renovation that began in April 2026 and is scheduled to last until early 2027. Therefore, although it may still be mentioned on some general Disneyland Paris pages related to character dining, we would not consider it an available option for your trip right now. The official restaurant directory shows it as closed and Disneyland Paris News confirms the extended renovation.

As of today, there are several alternatives that allow you to enjoy character dining and offer quite different experiences.

Auberge de Cendrillon: a fairytale experience in Fantasyland

Auberge de Cendrillon remains one of the most recognizable options for those looking for an experience with Disney Princesses.

It is located inside Disneyland Park, in Fantasyland, and offers table service with French cuisine. Current official information presents the experience in the company of Disney Princesses and Mickey Mouse dressed for the occasion.

The key here is the type of magic you are looking for.

If the Princesses are an important part of your trip and you are drawn to a table-service experience with a fairytale atmosphere, it may make a lot of sense to reserve a spot.

But, again, we would not choose Auberge simply because “it is the princess restaurant.” We would choose it because that type of experience has value for your group.

The Regal View Restaurant: Disney Princesses at Disney Adventure World

This is one of the major new features that significantly changes the current landscape.

The Regal View Restaurant is located on Adventure Way, inside Disney Adventure World, next to the lake. It is a table-service restaurant where Disney Princesses make appearances during the meal. Disneyland Paris presents it as an elegant dining experience, featuring international cuisine and views of the lake.

And here it is worth clarifying a common confusion: it is not the World of Frozen restaurant.

Regal View Disneyland Paris

The Regal View is located on Adventure Way and its character offering is focused on Disney Princesses. Its opening has added a new alternative for enjoying this type of experience in the second park without automatically replacing all previous options.

It can be especially interesting if you are going to spend a good part of the day at Disney Adventure World and want to integrate your meal into the park's own rhythm.

Royal Banquet: Mickey, Minnie and friends at the Disneyland Hotel

Royal Banquet offers a quite different proposal.

It is located in the Disneyland Hotel and operates as a buffet. At character dining experiences, you can find Mickey, Minnie, and their friends dressed in their finest attire, although, as always, the specific characters may vary.

An important advantage is that you do not need to be staying at the Disneyland Hotel to book Royal Banquet, naturally subject to availability. Disneyland Paris itself specifies that this restaurant is accessible to other visitors.

For a family looking for classic characters and preferring a buffet over a more leisurely table service, it can be a particularly good fit.

La Table de Lumière: a more exclusive option at the Disneyland Hotel

La Table de Lumière has a more exclusive focus and is centered on a dining experience with Disney Princesses and, on some occasions, their princes. Its atmosphere is inspired by the Hall of Mirrors and the dining proposal is table service.

Here is a fundamental condition: to book La Table de Lumière it is necessary to be staying at the Disneyland Hotel.

Therefore, it is not an alternative that makes sense to compare for all travelers. Its value is closely linked to those who have already chosen that hotel and want gastronomy and characters to be an important part of the accommodation experience.

So, which option is better?

We would not choose a character meal by asking ourselves which one is “the best”.

We would ask what type of encounter you want to experience.

If you are especially excited about the Princesses, Auberge de Cendrillon and The Regal View start from that theme, although with different atmospheres and locations.

If you prefer classic characters like Mickey and his friends, Royal Banquet goes in a different direction.

Frozen Tavern

And if you are staying at the Disneyland Hotel and are looking for a more exclusive experience linked to the hotel itself, La Table de Lumière falls into another category.

It is a decision very similar to choosing a hotel: the most expensive, new, or popular option does not necessarily have to be the one that adds the most value to your trip.

Does a character meal save time?

We have to be a little careful here.

We would not say that booking a character meal automatically “saves lines”.

It can help integrate several encounters into a time you would already be spending eating. And if your goal is simply to enjoy characters without chasing specific encounters all day, that can make the planning more comfortable.

But it does not guarantee seeing a specific character, nor does it necessarily replace other encounters you are excited about.

If your child specifically dreams of meeting a character, we would not organize the trip assuming they will appear at a specific meal unless Disneyland Paris expressly confirms it for that experience. The official policy is clear: characters and their schedules may vary.

So I would think of these meals as a way to make room for characters within the trip, not as a trick to eliminate all the queues.

Is it just for kids?

No.

And we believe it is worth insisting on this.

An adult couple can greatly enjoy a character meal. The same can happen with a group of friends, a family with teenagers, or several generations traveling together.

The question is not age.

The question is how much you care about the characters.

If an adult gets more excited about the idea of dining surrounded by characters than an eight-year-old child, the experience has more value for that adult. It's that simple.

We don't need to infantilize the excitement to justify it.

How a character meal influences the pace of the day

Here is one of the parts that is sometimes forgotten when booking.

A character meal requires time.

We wouldn't treat it as a quick stop to eat and keep running. Precisely part of its value consists of being able to sit down, enjoy the experience, and let the encounters happen during the meal.

That is why where you place it matters a lot.

A reservation in the middle of a very busy day can become a wonderful break. But if you have squeezed it in between too many scheduled priorities, it can make you more focused on the clock than on the characters.

Before booking it, I would look at which park you are going to visit, what other experiences have a set time, and how you want that day to feel.

If it is your first time, our guide on what to do in Disneyland Paris during your first visit can help you separate what is truly important from what simply seems essential on paper.

What happens if you have a Dining Plan

This point deserves to be reviewed carefully because it depends on the plan contracted and the current conditions for your stay.

In the current offer prior to the change scheduled for April 2027, Disneyland Paris indicates that the Extra Plus Meal Plan includes one character meal per stay and that the Premium allows you to use the available vouchers for character lunches or dinners. The Standard and Plus plans do not include them in the same way, although there may be the possibility of paying for the experience separately or using a voucher by paying a supplement according to the conditions. Having a Meal Plan, furthermore, does not automatically reserve a table.

Disneyland Paris has already announced a new range of plans for stays starting from April 1, 2027, so this is one of those points that should be checked according to the specific dates of your trip.

If you are trying to decide which option interests you, you can find more information in our guide on half board or full board at Disneyland Paris.

When is the best time to book?

Character meals are popular experiences and availability can sell out.

Disneyland Paris recommends booking in advance. Currently, restaurant reservations can open up to two months before, while those staying at a Disney Hotel can access certain reservations as soon as they receive their stay confirmation; even so, some restaurants may open availability later on.

We would not leave it, therefore, to decide once you are there if you already know that character dining is one of your priorities.

But we would not book first and think about how to fit it in later either.

The ideal sequence is the opposite: first decide how important the experience is, then on which day it makes the most sense, and finally look for availability.

So, is a character meal at Disneyland Paris worth it?

It can be very much worth it when the characters are part of the magic of the trip.

When you know that this encounter will generate excitement.

When you like the idea of sitting down calmly and turning the meal into an experience.

Or when you want to dedicate a specific moment to the characters without building the whole day around different encounters.

On the other hand, if characters are secondary to you, we would not book one of these meals just because it seems like something you "have to do at Disney".

That budget can provide more value at another restaurant, in a different experience, or simply by making the trip a bit more affordable.

For us, the decision is summarized quite well like this:

A character meal is not essential. But if meeting them is part of what you want to remember from the trip, it can easily become one of those moments that justify having set aside time for it.
